BU Market Fun Fact: Makgeolli

KR1

It’s raining outside; let's have a Korean-style gathering!

In South Korea, there is an interesting custom that people enjoy eating fried pancakes (전) paired with Makgeolli (막걸리) when it’s raining!

Why this combination? The sizzling sound of frying pancakes resembles the raining sound. It creates a pleasant atmosphere that allows people to enjoy the pancakes and listen to the rain at the same time.

As for drinking Makgeolli, it not only complements the pancakes but also has historical significance. It was a common drink for farmers in ancient times. When it rained, farmers were unable to work in the fields, so they would gather and drink Makgeolli with their neighbours. Over time, this tradition evolved into enjoying pancakes with Makgeolli in rainy days.
