Chocolade (Chocolate)

The first official reference to cocoa in Dutch history dates back to 1687. By the late 17th century, a small cocoa and chocolate industry emerged in Zeeland and the Zaanstreek, with the first chocolate windmill opening in 1703. Here, cocoa beans were processed into chocolate paste, laying the foundation for modern chocolate production.

Today, Tony’s Chocolonely, a local brand, continues this legacy, championing sustainability with its mission to make chocolate 100% slave-free. Through direct trade, fair wages and 100% traceable, Fairtrade-certified cocoa, they combat child labour and modern slavery. As a certified B Corporation, they uphold the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility.
