Chengdu Cultural Study Tour
In Oct 2024, ESP students embarked on an exciting 5-day study tour to Chengdu. Through engaging activities and visits to iconic landmarks, historical and cultural sites, students gained a deeper appreciation for Sichuan’s heritage, traditions, and its role in preserving both cultural and environmental treasures.
Sanxingdui (三星堆): Secrets of Ancient Shu (蜀)
At Sanxingdui, students were immersed in the fascinating world of ancient Shu culture. They discovered the secrets of a unique society that celebrated the sun and believed in powerful connections between humans and the cosmos. They explored artifacts over 3,000 years old, including bronze, gold, jade, and pottery, which showed the creativity and advanced skills of the Shu people.
This experience gave students a better understanding of how ancient cultures lived and thought, inspiring them to appreciate the incredible achievements of the past and the creativity that shaped human history.
Sichuan Opera: A Timeless Art
Sichuan Opera, a cultural treasure dating back to the Ming Dynasty, blends singing, recitation, acting, and martial arts to animate historical tales and folk legends.
At the iconic Jinjiang Theatre, students were amazed by the magic of face changing, flame-throwing, chair turning, and overhead candle performances.
This unforgettable visit gave students a chance to experience the beauty of Sichuan Opera up close, an art form that continues to impress audiences around the world with its energy, creativity, and cultural richness.
Wuhou Temple & Wenshu Monastery: Echoes of Wisdom and Serenity
Wuhou Temple, a famous historical site dedicated to Zhuge Liang, the renowned chancellor and military strategies of the Shu Han state during the Three Kingdoms period. At Wuhou Temple, students learned about the legendary stories of Zhuge Liang and Liu Bei and gained insights into enduring values such as wisdom, loyalty, and sacrifice, which have long influenced and continue to shape the Chinese culture.
Wenshu Monastery, a stunning Tang Dynasty temple, is one of the most important and well-preserved temples in the region. Students explored its peaceful surroundings while reflecting on compassion and community - values that remain vital in today’s society.
Sichuan University: A Legacy of Learning
With a distinguished 130-year legacy, Sichuan University is known for its academic excellence and cultural preservation. During their visit, students toured the Sichuan University Museum, which houses a rich collection of cultural artifacts and artworks, demonstrating the blend of education and tradition.
Through engaging courses on intangible cultural heritage, students practiced traditional handicrafts, connecting deeply with Sichuan’s cultural legacy. They also learned about the University’s commitment to research and interdisciplinary learning, leaving them inspired by its dedication to preserving and advancing knowledge.
Chengdu Research Base: Guardians of Biodiversity
During the study tour, students visited the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, gaining a unique opportunity to engage with wildlife conservation and environmental science. This experience deepened their understanding of biodiversity and the vital importance of protecting endangered species.
By observing the care and rehabilitation of giant pandas, students gained valuable insights into conservation efforts. This experience fostered a sense of responsibility and encouraging them to think critically about global environmental challenges.
Zhuhai Day Tour - China Airshow: Inspring the Future of Aerospace
Students witnessed the latest advancements in aviation and aerospace technology at the China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition. They viewed impressive displays of commercial jets, military planes, and drones, gaining firsthand insights into groundbreaking innovations.
The exhibition featured breathtaking aerobatic performances and seminars led by industry experts. Networking with leaders and enthusiasts in the field ignited students’ passion for aerospace careers, encouraging them to envision their future contributions to this industry.
Shengzhen Day Tour - Innovation and Art in Urban Development
Visiting the DJI Technology Innovation Center in Shekou allowed students to dive into the world of drone technology and explore the prospects of low-altitude economy. They experienced firsthand how these innovations have transformed industries such as filmmaking, agriculture, and public safety. Students learned from briefings by DJI professionals and through hands-on interaction with advanced products.
The tour at the Shenzhen Contemporary Art and Planning Exhibition Hall offered a unique perspective on the connection between art and urban development. Students explored how art mirrors societal shifts and shapes city planning, enabling them to understand creativity’s role in building vibrant and impactful urban spaces.
Guangzhou Day Tour - A Journey Through History, Culture and Substainability
As the capital of Guangdong Province, Guangzhou stands as a vital economic and cultural hub in southern China. The city plays a key role in the Greater Bay Area, seamlessly blending its rich heritage with modern development.
At the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, students admired intricate wood carvings and traditional values, while the Yongqing Fang visit showcased local lifestyles, architecture, and handicrafts. A tour of the Cantonese Opera Museum offered a glimpse into the preservation of opera culture through artifacts and exhibitions, deepening students’ appreciation for Lingnan culture and the importance of cultural diversity.
The trip concluded at Flower City Square, a stunning example of sustainable urban design. Its lush gardens and art installations highlight the integration of nature into city life, reflecting Guangzhou's commitment to environmental stewardship. This visit inspired students to value green spaces and consider sustainability's role in shaping modern cities.
